Some say it was a German who invented the automobile, but we Oppos know it was really a Frenchman. Whether you credit Cugnot’s 1769 self-propelled barge, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , or this, Édouard Delamare-Deboutteville’s 1884 gas powered buggy, it was the French. And, this one had a proper steering wheel and 4 wheels even, so it was much more a car than Benz’s trike. Actually, looking at it, I think Ed also invented the pickup. It used a four-stroke engine running on gas oil and drove 3.6 miles in February, 1884. And, starting a tradition for French cars, it was terribly unreliable. Delamare-Deboutteville apparently built several vehicles some of which reportedly exploded. But, hey, nearly 150 years later that still happens to new cars.

If we’re only talking invention, rather than actual implementation, The Selden patent, filed in 1879 is pretty amazing:
It was also four wheeled, and steering wheel equipped, but more amazingly it was also front wheel drive. Of course he kept the patent from being granted until 1895, and didn’t actually build the thing until he was forced to defend the patent.
Interestingly, it appears to share the same steering mechanism as the French vehicle - I wonder, one of Selden’s amendments to the original patent? Who copied who?

Yeah, the Selden is an interesting one, but like you said, points off for not being built until later. I wonder if perhaps that steering mechanism was borrowed from a different application? It is interesting that they’re so similar. Maybe it came from something railroad related.

There was also, of course, the Bollée La Mancelle from 1878, which might be the first front engine/RWD car and was also certainly the first car to go into series production (50 built).

Yeah, not internal combustion, but Bollée was definitely the first car manufacturer. And between the father and son, they were around for a long time.

Internal combustion a car, otherwise no Tesla would be road legal.

Joyeux quatorze Juliet ! Or rather: the 20th...
Apparently he didn’t just invent the pickup but the coupe as well looking at that stamp! I wonder if they had to cope with stuff like oversteer back then...

Interesting that it’s a coupe and not a coupé. That steering looks pretty direct, so I would treat it gingerly around the bends. I wonder if you could control those rear brakes independently so you could do spinouts. If you notice, I think that little wheel under the seat is the throttle. It might have been positioned so that it sticks out between your legs. No carburetor, either, so I think it just poured more fuel into the engine. No wonder they blew up.

So it’s got a medieval kind of cruise control. Awesome. Independent suspension is possible as well with two chains. What a concept.

It was years ahead of its time. Two more chains and it’s AWD.

Add a roof and it’s actually a coupe!

Add a long roof, and it’s a station wagon!
